Boys win two before holiday break

Girls win one, lose two

The Delavan-Darien High School boys basketball team had two games last week before an 18-day holiday break.

On Dec. 15, the Comets beat Union Grove at home 60-49.

Thanks to its defense, the Comets held a 28-19 lead going into halftime. In the second half, both teams kept close in the scoring column, giving the Comets a 60-49 victory.

Three Comets scored in double figures, while Jayce Crull added nine. Brandon Edmonds had the best statistical night, scoring 12 points to go along with his 12 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

The Comets recorded 17 assists compared to its 11 turnovers. William Brown scored six points on two three-pointers while dishing out nine assists in the process.

The win gave Delavan-Darien a 4-2 record heading into its final game before the break, which featured a road visit to Wilmot Union, which entered at 2-1. The Comets played Wilmot Union tight throughout, and held a 37-33 lead going into the second half.

Wilmot Union ended up winning the second half, but only by a point, eventually leading to the Comets’ 77-74 win. Only six Comets scored in the game, while Wilmot Union had five players see the ball go through the hoop.

The Comets were again led by Edmonds, as the 6-foot-2 junior forward scored 24 points in addition to his four rebounds and three assists. Brown scored eight points in this one, to go along with his eight assists, three steals and three rebounds.

Austin Ryan scored 18 points and gathered eight rebounds while recording three assists as well. Wilmot Union out-rebounded the Comets, 34-28, but the Comets made eight of its 25 3-pointers compared to Wilmot Union’s 5-of-25.

The Comets’ next game will begin at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 5 against Janesville Parker (2-6) at Janesville Parker High School.

Girls basketball

The Comets girls team had a slightly busier week before its 14-day stretch without games, playing three games over the course of six days. The team got started with a 50-40 win on the road over Juda on Dec. 14.

Seven girls recorded at least 16 minutes of action in the 10-point win, while freshman point guard Kat Lopez led the team in scoring with 16. In the paint, Jennah Speth scored 10 points to go along with her team-high 14 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots.

Kenna Timmerman added nine points in addition to her six rebounds and six blocked shots. Delavan-Darien then was at home to Union Grove on Dec. 17 and held a 31-28 lead at halftime.

The second half, however, was owned by Union Grove. The opposition out-scored the Comets, 37-21 in that second half, leading to its eventual 65-52 victory. The loss brought the Comets’ record to 3-3 after recording just three wins all of last season.

Three different Comets – Lopez, Speth and Claudia Nieuwenhuis – each scored 12 points against Union Grove while Timmerman led the way on the glass with nine rebounds. The team then played its final game of the week on Saturday at Milton High School and lost 70-45.

Lopez led the team in scoring with 18 while no other player scored more than six points. Haley Mueller and Timmerman each garnered six rebounds and Lopez recorded a team-high four assists and two steals in the loss.

The 3-4 Comets were scheduled to play at Wilmot Tuesday before its break off the court.
