MARILYN R. COOGAN

Marilyn R. Coogan, 77, of Elkhorn died unexpectedly on Aug. 6, 2012 at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee.

She was born July 25, 1935 in Auburndale to the late Ray and Stella (Markee) Kennedy. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1953, Dodge County Teacher’s College in 1955, and earned her Master of Education degree from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1978.  She married the late Richard “Dick” J. Coogan on Aug. 25, 1956 in Watertown.

It was also in 1956 that she started her 31-year career teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. She was hired by the Elkhorn Area School District in 1970 where she taught until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of the Walworth County Historical Society where she enjoyed teaching students about Wisconsin history in the Blooming Prairie School House located in the park at the Walworth County Fair Grounds.

She is survived by her daughter Bridget (William) Trewyn and son-in-law Tom (Jamie) Stepp; three grandchildren, Ryan and Cameron Stepp and Signe Trewyn all of Elkhorn; two sisters, Kathleen Russell of San Francisco and Myrtle Schulte of Marshfield.

She was further preceded in death by her infant son, Christopher; daughter, Claire Stepp; three sisters, Connie Leick, Joyce Libra and June Bevilaqua; and brother, Jim Kennedy.

Memorial services will be 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12, at Haase-Lockwood & Associates Funeral Home, 730 N. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn, with Rev. Dr. Scott McLeod officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday from noon until time of services.
