The Elkhorn Area High School boys and girls cross country teams each finished seventh Oct. 13 in the Southern Lakes Conference boys and girls cross country meet at The Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Somers.

Westosha Central won both the boys and girls meets.

“We managed to stay dry and miss all of the rain (Saturday),” coach Randi Wulf said. “It ended up being a great day for a cross country meet.”

For the girls, Stephanie Schmidt finished 20th overall in 16:27, T. Maier finished 23rd in 16:33 and Kenna Miller finished 32nd in 17:01 on the 4,000-meter course.

“On the girls side eight of our 12 runners had their best time of the season,” Wulf said.

Wulf highlighted the performances of Brianna Brueggemann and April Williams, both of whom broke the 20 minute-mark for the first time this year. Brueggemann finished 53rd (19:48) and Williams 54th (19:50).

Wulf also praised the performance of Emily Neinfeldt, whom he said ran a solid race after dealing with injuries for much of the season.

Austin Reese led the Elks boys team. Reese finished 17th (17:47) on the 5,000-meter course. Oscar Contreras finished 29th (18:17).

“Another highlight on the boys side are three runners improving their best times by over a minute,” Wulf said. “They were Trevor Brueggemann, Jake Nethery and Luke Williams.”

Westosha Central’s Tyler Fiebelkorn won the boys race in 16:28. Westosha’s Melissa Capra won the girls race in 15:35.4.

“Even though we didn’t finish very high as a team on either side, I continue to be impressed with how this team as a whole keeps improving throughout the season,” Wulf said.
