The defending state champions just keep winning. Delavan-Darien’s boys soccer team entered last week as the No. 1-ranked team with an 11-0 record. The Comets played two more in-conference games on Sept. 22 and Sept. 24, and exited the week, 13-0.

Coming into the Sept. 22 matchup against Waterford, both teams were undefeated in the Southern Lakes Conference standings. One half into the match, and the Comets held a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Jason Cano opened the game up with his goal in the 14th minute. Just a minute later, junior forward Tigrio Huerta scored, making the game, 2-0.

Three minutes after that, Cano scored his second of the game, giving the Comets a 3-0 lead. Huerta then made the score 4-0, and Jaime Rodriguez scored the fifth and final goal of the game for either side.

The Comets gave Waterford its first conference loss of the season, 5-0. The only other school with an undefeated record is Badger, who the Comets play on Sept. 28. Following Waterford two days later a home game against Burlington.

Burlington hadn’t won a conference game to this point in the season, and that didn’t change after playing the Comets. The first half went back-and-forth, but not between the two teams – it was between two Comet players.

In the sixth minute, Cano scored an assisted goal thanks to Huerta. Three minutes later, Cano assisted Huerta’s goal, making the game, 2-0. Cano then scored in the 31st minute, again thanks to Huerta. Huerta then followed it up nine minutes later, with a goal that was assisted by Cano.

The see-saw goal-scoring and assisting between the two forwards led to a 4-0 Comets lead at halftime. In the second half, Huerta scored two more, and Burlington got its only goal in-between the junior’s two.

The Comets defeated the Demons, 6-1, with Huerta scoring four goals to go along with his two assists. Head coach Mike Marse said that his team played well this week, both offensively and defensively.

“Skill-wise, we are in good shape,” Marse said. “But we still need to grow in our decision making and game recognition on offense and defense.”

The perfect season remains intact, as the Comets are now 13-0 on the season, but a busy week ensues, as the team plays three matches in four days, starting with Badger. Then on Saturday, the Comets will participate in an invitational against Badger, Big Foot and Manitowac Lincoln.

Badger enters Monday’s contest as the home team, with a 4-0 record in conference and a 10-4 record overall. Badger is also a Division 1 school, while Delavan-Darien is the Southern Lakes Conference’s only Division 3 school. Last season, the Comets defeated Badger, 6-1.
