Hoos Woods
Participants in two upcoming events – a kids day camp and a wildlife digital photography class – at Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center will get an up-close look at birds of prey, such as the owl pictured above. (Submitted photo)

Hoo’s Woods also hosting a wildlife digital photography class

Children are invited to take part in a unique opportunity for hands-on learning and up-close encounters while learning about birds of prey and their role in the environment in an upcoming camp.

Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center will host Raptor Day Camp for Kids ages 8 to 14 on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The camp will be safe (children will not be handling live birds) and aim to instill a wonder of the outdoors in children in a fun and educational manner. The camp will allow kids to:

  • Learn about wildlife rescue and rehab;
  • Make crafts – window clings, raptor ID cards, a drawing of a bird and more – that they can take home;
  • Get a tour of the Hoo’s Wood Raptor Center facility and meet the raptor gang;
  • Be treated to a snack;
  • Participate in a telemetry hunt.

Class size is limited and registration closes Aug. 1. In the event there is enough interest, a second class will be offered at a later date. The $25 cost per child is tax deductible.

Photography class

On Sunday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center will host Wild about Raptors Photo Day for anyone 12 years of age and older.

Professional photographer Allison Halkey will lead the class, teaching participants about: lighting, composition, depth of field and the correct camera functions to help capture the “perfect” shot.

Participants will be able to photograph three of the center’s educational birds (eagle, owl and falcon) in three different settings to practice the techniques being taught. Also included will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility.

The cost is $50 per person and is tax deductible. The event will be a fundraising benefit for the birds of the center, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The center, which receives no state or federal funding and relies strictly on donations, provides educational programs to schools, scouts, libraries and others while also rehabilitating birds of prey.

Registration deadline for the Raptor Day Camp for Kids and the Wild About Raptors Photo Day is Aug. 1.
