The 5th annual Savory Sounds concert series began last Thursday with Kaia Fowler, a vocalist/guitarist whose music covers a cross-blend of folk, blues, rock and Americana guitar work ranging from delicate finger-style to rhythmic strumming.

Fowler has performed at a variety of venues including at folk clubs, house concerts at Café Carpe in Fort Atkinson and the Froth House in Madison. Her songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical metaphors, rich melodies and creative harmonies.

Christine Hayes, who began the series in 2011, said the Savory Sounds series enhances the quality of life in Whitewater.

“It’s what you’d expect in a large city and people are delighted to find in our own small town. This outdoor musical venue is a treasure that even those from surrounding communities have discovered this gem,” she said.

“Supporting local talent is paramount for the future of the performing arts and this series exposes quality local musical talent to the community in a relaxing and welcoming setting,” Hayes added.

First Citizens State Bank sponsored the concert while La Preferida was the lunch vendor at the event, allowing attendees to grab a bite while listening in or bring their own lunch.

Savory Sounds” is a good example of strong partnering between the Whitewater Arts Alliance and community businesses including Commercial Bank, Fairhaven Senior Services, First Citizens State Bank, Fort Community Credit Union and Olm & Associates,” according to a press release about the series.

The series is in line with the Whitewater Arts Alliance mission statement, which seeks “to promote the visual and performing arts through an alliance of artists, individuals, educational resources, and organizations to promote creativity and diversity that will serve to educate and enrich the lives of the residents of the Whitewater community and surrounding areas.”

The Savory Sounds concerts are held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursdays near the Birge Fountain in front of the Cultural Arts Center, 402 W. Main St. in Whitewater. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside the Cultural Arts Center.

Upcoming Savory concerts are set for July 9, July 16 and July 23.
