Badger boys win SLC track title

Girls team settles for second by a single point

The Lake Geneva Badger boys and girls track teams finished first and second at the Southern Lakes Conference meet May 19. The boys won the event with 188 points as Westosha Central finished second with 141.16. The girls took second with 127 points, just one point behind Westosha Central.

The boys were paced by individual first-place finishes by Alex Martinez in the 1,600 meters (4:27.91) and the 3,200 meters (9:54.30), Jordan Mason in the 300-meter hurdles (39.38), and Zane Zachary in the triple jump (41-04.50).

The Badger relay teams had a strong meet with two firsts and a second. The 4×400 team of Mario Gomez, Cody Harren, Cody Sadikoff, and Kiley Lofy (3:31.63) and the 4×800 team of Gomez, Sadikoff, Miguel Barrera, and Gustavo Gordillo (8:17.82) took first. The 4×100 team of Tias Larson, Tyler VandeVelde, Keegan Lafferty, and Mick Borchert (45.90) took second.

Other top finishes for Badger included:

  • 100 meters – Zachary (second, 11.43);
  • 200 meters – Zachary (third, 23.29);
  • 400 meters – Lofey (second, 51.81);
  • 800 meters – Gomez (fourth, 2:01.29);
  • 1,600 meters – Sam Carmona (fifth, 4:38.05);
  • 3,200 meters – Carmona (fourth, 10:05.15);
  • 110-meter hurdles – Mason (second, 15.44) and Sam Lasch (fourth, 16.36);
  • Shot put – Akil Jackson (second; 43-07.50) and Cole Mikrut (fifth, 41-00.50);
  • Discus – Kackson (second; 126-07) and Matt Szeszol (third, 119-09);
  • High jump – Lasch (second; 6-04.00) and James Bowen (third; 6-00.00);
  • Pole vault – Jordan Monroe (fourth; 12-00.00);
  • Long jump – Lasch (second; 19-06.50); and
  • Triple jump – Lasch (fifth; 40-01.50).

The Badger girls were led by first-place finishes from Elizabeth Bullock in the shot put (34-06.50) and Sydney Collins in the high jump (5-00.00). Other top finishes for Badger included:

  • 100 meters – Madison Zukowski (fourth, 13.69) and Madisyn Cromey (fifth, 13.78);
  • 400 meters – Boiana Pagau (third, 1:05.46);
  • 800 meters – Maureen Clifford (fifth; 2:35.74);
  • 1,600 meters – Kuciana DiVito (second, 5:31.59) and Clifford (third, 5:32.24);
  • 3,200 meters – Cassi Mennenoh (fourth, 12:31.82) and DiVito (fifth, 12:40.86);
  • 100-meter hurdles – Olivia Asta (17.44);
  • 300-meter hurdles – Asta (third; 51.78);
  • Discus – Bullock (second; 96-04);
  • Triple jump – Collins (fourth; 31-10.50); and
  • 4×100 relay – Cromey, Stephanie Duewel, Callee Gilfoy and Allyssa Monroe (second, 53.10).

Softball splits two

The Badger softball team split two games with Nicolet and Kenosha Indian Trail on Saturday.

Badger defeated Nicolet (2-15) 11-6 in the first game behind big offensive games from Cayleen Ryan (triple, single, walk, three RBIs, and two runs scored), Kiley Johnson (triple, two singles, two runs scored), Jordan Stritesky (two singles, a walk, and three runs scored), and Morgan Moore (single, walk, two RBIs).

Badger drew first blood with a single run in the first inning. Stritesky singled, stole second and later scored on a single by Moore.

Nicolet tied it with a single run in the bottom of the second. Badger opened up some breathing room with four in the third. Julia Melson walked, Johnson singled, Stritesky drew a walk, and Ryan tripled clearing the bases. Ryan then scored on a ground out by Moore.

Nicolet found its offense in the fourth, plating five and tying the score but could not score again. Badger scored three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull away. Three Nicolet errors, two walks, and a wild pitch that scored Ryan from third helped the Badgers in the fifth. An RBI single by Kaitlyn McManus and RBI sacrifice by Taylor Garrels brought home Johnson and Stritesky who had both singled.

Badger lost the second game to Indian Trail 4-2. Indian Trail (7-11) led 4-0 after scoring twice in the second and two more times in the fifth. The Badgers struggled offensively for most of the game, not getting their first hit until the fifth inning. The Badgers did load the bases with two outs in the seventh and scored twice on five consecutive singles by Alyssa McKeon, Amanda Kuehl, Melson, Leslie Zelinski and Johnson. Zelinski and Johnson got the RBIs.

The Badgers (4-19, 0-14 SLC) also lost to third-ranked Union Grove (17-5, 12-2) 20-0 in five innings on May 19. The Broncos scored once in the first, four times in the second, four times in the fourth, and put 11 runs on the board in the fifth. Claire Ryan homered twice. Badger managed three hits from Ryan, McManus, and Kuehl.

Badger began Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional play on Wednesday as the No. 14 seed at third-seeded Janesville Craig.

Baseball splits pair

The Badger baseball team defeated Westosha Central 10-3 on May 21 behind solid pitching from Noel Vargas and Isaac Ziervogel. Vargas got the win hurling five innings, scattering seven hits, and giving up no earned runs. Ziervogel got the save with two innings of one-hit ball.

Badger scored twice in the top of the second but the falcons tied in the bottom of the fifth. Badger erupted for four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to pull away. The big blows in the seventh were delivered by Ziervogel with a two-RBI double and two RBI singles by Alex Morland and John Laskowski.

Laskowski and Ziervogel each had three hits. Laskowski had four RBIs, Ziervogel had two. Clint Ugolini and Tyler Love each had two hits as well.

Badger lost to Westosha Central (17-5, 11-3 SLC) 14-3 on May 19. The Falcons scored five times in the first two innings. Badger chipped away with single runs in the third and fourth, but the Falcons put the game away with three in the fifth and six in the sixth as Badger committed eight total errors. Six of Westosha Central’s runs were unearned. Badger managed five hits all by different players. Love had two RBIs.

The Badgers (9-12, 8-6) also lost to Kenosha Bradford (16-3) 5-4 at home May 22. Bradford took the lead with a single run in the third. Badger tied it in the fourth, but Bradford scored four in the fifth to take charge. Badger made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh scoring three times on an RBI double by Ugolini, an RBI single by Logan Siegler, and an RBI single by Vargas, but fell just short.

Vargas went three for three with two RBIs. Love, Colton Tisch and Levi Burnette each had two hits.

Golf finishes first in SLC

The Badger golf team finished the Southern Lakes Conference season in first place after taking first place at all five SLC meets, including the conference meet May 19. Badger won the event with a score of 332. Waterford placed second with 345.

Badger placed two golfers on the first team all-conference team – Luke Bourneuf and Jonathon Duggan. Jackson Rademaker, Connor Duggan, and Alec Jacobsen made second team all-conference and Grant Fogt was named honorable mention.

Soccer loses twice

      The Badger soccer team recorded its seventh tie of the season 2-2 at home against Delavan-Darien (7-8-2, 2-3-1) on May 19. The Comets went up 2-0 on goals by Suleimy Perez and Claudia Nieuwenhuis but Badger answered with goals by Sharmaine Villarello (assist by Alyssa Borkowski) and Erin Utesch (assist by Villarello) in the first half. Neither team could score in the second half.

Badger lost to Wilmot (5-8-5, 1-5-1) 1-0 on May 21. Badger outshot Wilmot 7-2 but Wilmot’s Deja Simpson scored the game’s only goal.

Badger (3-8-7, 1-5-1) lost to Kenosha Indian Trail (11-7) 1-0 on May 22. The only goal of the game was scored by Indian Trail’s Emma Dalton in the 90th minute.
