Comets beat Clinton and Elkhorn, lose to Wilmot

Picking up three wins last week, the Delavan-Darien High School softball team improved to 4-1 after also suffering its first loss of the season.

The Comets swept Clinton in a non-conference double header, winning 11-0 and 16-1 and beat Elkhorn 6-3 in Southern Lakes Conference action.

The Comets lost 8-5 to Wilmot.

On April 13, the Comets beat Clinton 11-0 in the first game on 12 hits, with Katelyn Gonzalez collecting three of those hits.

Jaida Speth, Taylor McKinney and Cindy Crawford each added two hits, and Speth added three RBIs.

Jennah Speth got the win for the Comets, striking out 10 and walking just one.

In the second game of the day, freshmen Jaida Speth got the win following her sister’s win, striking out eight and walking one.

She also helped to lead the Comets offensively, getting two hits and three RBIs.

Crawford went two for four with three RBIs, and Jennah Speth was two for two with three RBIs.

Morgyn DeLara and Brooke Boss also each had two hits.

On April 14, the Comets suffered their first loss of the season, dropping an 8-5 game to Wilmot.

Wilmot scored first in the third inning, going up 2-0 but the Comets scored four in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 4-2 lead.

Wilmot took the lead back at 6-4 in the next inning of action and went on for the 8-5 win.

Jennah Speth got the loss, striking out six and walking three.

Jaida Speth led the Comets from the plate, going three for four.

Thursday in Elkhorn the Comets bounced back and picked up the 6-3 win.

DeLara had three hits for the Comets and Crawford added two hits and three RBIs.

The Comets host Westosha Central at 4:30 p.m. Friday and will travel to Monroe for a tournament starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Next week the Comets travel to Union Gove on Monday and Burlington on Tuesday with both games starting at 4:30 p.m.
