A Delavan man faces drug and animal cruelty charges after police found “deplorable” conditions when they executed a search warrant at his Lawson School Road home last week.

Elkhorn police executed a search warrant for a drug case at 501 Lawson School Road, Unit 6, at about 10:45 a.m. April 15, said Delavan Police Chief Tim O’Neill. Police found “deplorable conditions” with dog feces throughout the townhouse and called Lakeland Animal Welfare Society to remove three dogs from the residence, he said.

“It was just unfit for human habitation,” O’Neill said.

Elkhorn Police Chief Joel Christensen declined to release the name of the man, whom he said has not been arrested. He said the drug case has been referred to the Walworth County district attorney’s office.

Delavan police will refer charges of animal cruelty against the man to the DA’s office, and the Health and Human Services Department is looking into the condition of the home, O’Neill said.

He said the dog droppings were the most apparent problem in the residence but the matter is still under investigation. Police are looking into the number of residents in the apartment and whether any children were living in those conditions, he said.
