Gymnasts take fifth at SLC meet

The Elkhorn Area High School gymnastics team finished fifth by less than a point Feb. 20 in the Southern Lakes Conference gymnastics meet at Waterford High School.

The Elks scored 112.475 points, .525 of a point behind fourth-place Whitewater (113.000).

Defending champion Burlington Co-op won its sixth consecutive conference title with a total of 142.200 points. BC is the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 state runner-up in each of the last four seasons.

Waterford finished second (134.700) and Jefferson third (123.625).

Megan Jacobson finished sixth on the bars for the Elks’ best individual finish in any event. Jacobson posted a score of 7.950. Jacobson finished 10th in the all-around (30.500).

Ronica Fuller led Elkhorn with an 11th-place finish in the floor exercise (7.95).

Cameron Jacobson finished best among the Elks on vault. Jacobson came in 12th (7.95), and finished 16th (7.175) to pace the Elks on beam.

Burlington’s Molly Benavides won two events and the all-around. Benavides won the all-around with a score of 38.975, and also the beam (9.7) and vault (9.725).

Benavides finished second in the floor exercise (9.65) and on bars (9.5).

Burlington’s Bailey Fitzpatrick won the floor exercise (9.675), bars (9.725). Fitzpatrick finished second in the all-around (37.925), beam (9.05) and vault (9.475).

Up next for the Elks is a WIAA Division 2 sectional meet Saturday at Mount Horeb High School.
