Three wrestlers qualify for sectional

For the second straight year, Delavan-Darien High School wrestler Ricardo Cruz is a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional champion.

Cruz was 3-0 on Saturday at the Wilmot regional in the 220-pound weight class, staring his day with a bye. In the semi-final round, Cruz beat Brody Steadman of Wilmot by fall at 1:44. In the championship round, Cruz beat Gavin Chesmore of Milton by a 7-1 decision.

With his victory, Cruz will wrestler Saturday in Sun Prairie at the WIAA sectional meet.

Also qualifying for the sectional is junior Gage Wuttke, at 126 pounds, as he finished third for the Comets with a 2-2 record. Wuttke started his day with an overtime win over Kyle Moudy of Wilmot. After losing a major decision in the semi-finals to Dylan Siener, of Janesville Parker, Wuttke came back and beat Griffin Bollendorf of Westosha Central by a 4-3 decision. In the battle for second place, Wuttke lost by fall at 1:49 to Levi Garrett of Milton.

At 120 pounds, Carter Schwarz finished in fourth place and will travel to Sun Prairie on Saturday.

Also placing for the Comets, but not advancing was Andres Flores at 170 pounds and Gerardo Martinez at 182 pounds who both finished in fifth place. Carlos Dominguez, wrestling at 195 pounds, took sixth place.
