Walworth crash leaves two critically injured

A 29-year-old Crystal Lake, Ill. man and his 7-year-old passenger were critically injured following a crash in the Town of Walworth Sunday.

At about 5 p.m. Sunday, Walworth County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a crash involving two vehicles at the intersection of highways 14 and 67 and Lakeville Road in the Town of Walworth.

According to a press release from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, a 2008 Chevy van towing a 1996 Smokercraft fishing boat and trailer was traveling southbound on Highway 14 when a 1996 Chevy Cavalier heading eastbound on Highway 67 failed to yield after stopping at the stop sign.

The van, driven by Scott D. Bergstrom, 58, of Huntley, Ill., was unable to avoid the collision and struck the driver’s side of the Cavalier, driven by Shawn E. Cummings of Crystal Lake, the release states.

Cummings, who sustained critical injuries from the crash was transported by Flight for Life to a Janesville hospital.

His passenger, 7-year-old Lia M. Cummings, was flown by Flight for Life to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee with critical injuries.

Sabrina A. Hinde, 22, of Glendale Heights, Ill., was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for minor injury.

Bergstrom reportedly had no apparent injuries.

His sole passenger, William F. Binotti, 58, of Tinley Park, Ill., was taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The Walworth County Crash Investigation Team was called to the scene where the road was shut down for three hours.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Walworth Fire and Rescue, Sharon Fire and Rescue, Paratech Ambulance Service, Walworth, Fontana, Sharon and Geneva Township police, Wisconsin State Patrol, Rock County Sheriff’s Office, and McHenry (Ill.) County Sheriff’s Office. Flight for Life Milwaukee and Flight For Life McHenry responded.

This crash remains under investigation at this time.
