The Delavan-Darien High School boys soccer team won the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional champion title Oct. 16 with a 4-1 win over St. Anthony School of Milwaukee.

St. Anthony’s ousted the Comets from the No. 3 spot in Division 3 last week after the Comets lost to Elkhorn in the Southern Lakes Conference tournament championship.

The Comets, who are fourth in the state, first beat East Troy 10-1 on Oct. 14 in the opening round of regional play.

Seven Comet players scored in the game that was shortened due to the 10-goal mercy rule.

Chuy Rocha, the leading goal scorer in the state, had three goals to lead the Comets.

Tigrio Huerta added two goals, and Saul Rivera, Christian Gomez, Rodrigo Aranda, Allan Sanchez and Adrian Manriguez each added one.

Huerta had three assists, and Rocha, Gomez, Gerardo Rodriguez and Jose Lemus each had one.

Thursday the Comets hosted St. Anthony’s and scored the first four goals of the game to go on for the regional championship.

Rivera scored at the 26-minute mark for the Comets after a tough defensive battle between the two teams.

Rocha scored the next two goals for the Comets, putting them up 3-0 at halftime.

Rocha scored once more, early in the second half at the 49-minute mark to give the Comets the 4-0 lead.

Late in the game St. Anthony added one goal, before the Comets went on for the 4-1 victory.

Huerta had two assists to help the Comets to the win.

On Oct. 23 the Comets host the second-ranked team in the state, Waukesha’s Catholic Memorial High School.

The winner will advance to the sectional final in East Troy at 1 p.m. Saturday for a chance to advance to the WIAA state meet at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee on Oct. 30.

Results from this week’s games will appear in next week’s issue of the Delavan Enterprise.
