The Hononegah Invite isn’t what you would call a normal swimming invitational.

The invite is broken down into five events – 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 freestyle – and the girls compete in divisions by grade – freshmen, sophomore, junior or senior.

Still the Elkhorn girls swim team put together an impressive performance Saturday at the meet, held at Hononegah High School in Rockton, Ill.

“We had some great swims at this invite,” said coach Jamie Richardson. “The girls have been training hard and Friday was a tough day of practice. They came back physically and mentally strong on Saturday and really stepped it up and performed well.

“We’ve been working on all of the strokes all season and the girls really showed what hard work does. We looked really well swimming events that we may not normally swim.”

Top finishers in each class division were as follows: Second – junior Kady Ruemmele; Third – sophomore Rachel Anderson and senior Linnea Baas; Fifth – junior Lilly Remington; Sixth – sophomore Bethany Buikema, junior Emily Ames and senior Emma Glogovsky.

Ruemmele had a great day finishing with two first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.

“Kady has tremendous walls on her backstroke and gains a lot of ground,” said Richardson. “She had a nice solid race in the100 freestyle where she was really reaching on her stroke and being very efficient.”

Rachel Anderson claimed top honors in the 100 breaststroke.

“Rachel really finished her race strong and was really reaching out on the last 12.5 yards of her race,” said Richardson.

Rounding out top honors was Anne Blackbourn in the 50 freestyle and both Savanna Kreiser and Ashli Medrow in the 100 breaststroke.

“Anne had a great turn and she is a finisher on her races,” said Richardson. “She puts forth 100 percent effort in every meet. Savanna had great strength during the entire race. Ashli had a 1.65 second time drop with great underwater pullouts off the walls which is important in this event.”

Elkhorn’s girls swim team improved to 2-0 in the Southern Lakes Conference with a 118-52 win on the road against Jefferson/Cambridge.

“We had a good meet,” Richardson said. “We mixed things up again and had kids try some different events to see what they could do. We posted some great times and it’s always fun to see those times drop when the kids are working hard in practice.”

The Lady Elks went 1-2-3 in three individual events starting with the 200 freestyle where Anne Blackbourn took first, Savanna Kreiser second and Ellie Chechowitz third.

“Anne dropped .29 seconds and had great turnover the entire race,” said Richardson. “She always works hard and never complains when workouts are hard. Savanna really pushes herself in whatever event she is asked to swim. Ellie had great walls and really finished strong.”

In the 500 freestyle, Blackbourn once again led the way while Linnea Baas finished second and Emily Ackerman third.

“Anne had nice consistent 50 splits the entire race,” said Richardson. “Linnea had nice long strokes the entire race. Emily dropped 2.41 seconds and really finished strong to edge out a Jefferson competitor.”

The final 1-2-3 came in the 100 breaststroke where Kreiser took first, Rachel Anderson second and Ashli Medrow third.

“Savanna really finished her race strong,” said Richardson. “Rachel had nice underwater pullouts off of her walls. Ashli had a nice start and good streamline off of her start and turns.”
